The Janis Hardman Medical Support Grant honors the late Janis Hardman, who showed grace and poise in her battle with cancer and received tremendous support from the OWLS community. The grant is available to lawyers who identify as women and/or as members of any other historically disadvantaged groups who need financial support because they are unable to work or can only work a reduced schedule during a time of medical need.
The maximum grant is $1,500.
Recipients must be active members in good standing of the Oregon State Bar. They must also intend to continue in the practice or return to the practice of law. A short statement from a doctor indicating an inability to work, a need to reduce one’s work schedule due to illness, or a need to reduce one’s work schedule to provide care for a child, sibling, dependent, parent, grandparent, partner, or spouse is required.
Grant determination is based upon a combination of the following:
- Financial need: 40%
- Personal statement: 50%
- Intent to continue to practice law: 10%
- Overall application (including completeness, grammar, and typographical errors): 10%
