The Foundation is proud to offer this grant in honor of late Foundation Board member Armonica Gilford, the first Black female Oregon Assistant Attorney General. The grant is available to third- or fourth-year students attending the three Oregon law schools who can demonstrate a commitment to the Foundation’s goals through their personal volunteer or educational experience. Ethnic minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply. Each recipient receives a monetary grant in the amount of $1000 and is matched with a judge who serves as the student's mentor for the academic year. Beatrice Grace, a new lawyer, 2015 UO Law School graduate and proud member of OWLS, is a grateful recipient of two OWLS Foundation grants during her final year of law school — the Armonica Law Student Grant (2014) and the Vernellia Randall Bar Exam Grant (2015) — for the financial relief they brought her family: Last year, my family and I were entering a real crisis. At the end of my last year of law school, the ability to study for the bar presented a huge hurdle. I had no way to pay my bills, my rent. I was looking at having to work 12-hour shifts in the ER while trying to study and raise my two children as a single parent. Not passing the bar was an unthinkable option. It would have been a terrible hardship for my family. We had all worked so hard to get me to this point. I am the first person in my family to go to law school and the first person in my family to get an advanced degree. Now, this last mile seemed for all practical purposes impossible. The Oregon Women Lawyers Foundation announces that it has awarded the 2010-2011 Armonica Grants to the following law students: Erin McKee (Lewis and Clark Law School), Elizabeth Wooten (University of Oregon Law School), and Veronica Digman-McNassar (Willamette University School of Law). The Armonica Law Student Grant Program is awarded in honor of late Foundation Board member Armonica Gilford. The grant is available to 3rd year law students attending the three Oregon law schools who can demonstrate a commitment to the Foundation’s goals through an essay about their personal, volunteer, or educational experience. Foundation Selects Three Armonica Grant Recipients The Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of the Armonica Law Student Grant Program recipients for 2007-2008. Linda Barrera, a third year student at Lewis & Clark Law School, is a law clerk for the Washington County District Attorneys Office. In addition to being the only black and Hispanic person carrying out the clerk duties in the office, she also serves as a mentor to female and minority students at the Portland OIC Rosemary Anderson High School. Vanessa Nordyke, a third year student at the University of Oregon Law School, is a clerk with the Oregon Department of Justice. At UO, she is the Co-Director of the Women's Law Forum and President of the American Constitution Society. Vanessa was also instrumental in creating a pro bono group project in Eugene which introduces high school students to legal resources and the rights of domestic violence victims.
